8 Things

December 2nd, 2013 . by Melissa

My friend Joni tagged me on her blog to tell 8 things about me, so here it goes!

1) I am terrified of flying and heights. I cry hysterically at the tiniest bump of turbulence and if I’m up really high (like Eiffel tower or Sears tower high), I literally cling to the most interior wall in the room. Despite these fears, I actually face them often, because I really like to travel and I hate to miss out on awesome experiences.

2) I was huge fan of Emo and Punk music in high school. I’ve seen over 100 different bands perform live.

3) Whenever I’m asked, “What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?” I have two answers. The first: a  professional weed whacker at an oil refinery. I had to wear a flame retardant jumpsuit and a sign on my back that said “stand back at least 50 ft.” But it was really good money!  The second: An art model. This was at the very conservative BYU so it wasn’t the naked type of art modeling (I would’t be able to do that!!). It was really hard work to sit perfectly still for upwards of 45 minutes at a time; I only lasted a few weeks but greatly improved my posture in that amount of time!

4) I looooooooove movies. I could watch movies everyday! In fact, in college I did and then I was quizzed on them. (I majored in Film, with an emphasis on critical studies).  I love that Jack is already showing a great affinity for the motion picture, we have special movie dates at the theater and it’s awesome!

5) I am a convert to the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints. I joined when I was 11. I went to church without my family for several years until my dad joined the church when I was 16. When I was in high school I dated a boy who wasn’t a member and it was my biggest wish to have him join the church. He got close, but ultimately never did join. And it’s interesting because I didn’t even realize then that the true miracle at the time was my dad joining the church, it has been one of the biggest blessings in my life.

6) Neither of my children look like me! In fact, there have been a few occasions where I have seriously been stopped at the store and asked (usually by someone elderly), “Whose children are those? They can’t be yours! They look nothing like you.” Even though I have typically more dominant traits than Jason, they still both ended up with blond hair and blue eyes!   But, I love the way the look; they are both beautiful and I wouldn’t change anything about them.

7) I love theme parks. In fact, I refuse to have an odd number of children because I don’t want someone to always have to ride alone when we go on rides. I love roller coasters and am hoping that at least one of my children will share my enthusiasm for them so I will have someone to ride with me! (Jason’s not a fan and so far, neither is Jack!)

8) I was a gymnast for 11 years, from ages 3-14. I even qualified for the Junior Olympics at one point, but didn’t go. It was my life during my elementary school years. It also stunted my growth by about two inches, but now I’m the perfect height for Jason! :)
