Ober Gatlinburg

August 17th, 2013 . by Melissa

We decided to break up our long drive home from South Carolina with two stops. First, we stopped in Asheville, North Carolina (original home of the great Kathy Gerth) to see my step-brother and his family. It was really nice to visit with them and see their kiddos! Then, we continued on to Gatlinburg. When I was little (I think the first time I was two) my family visited Gatlinburg all the time. It was only a 4.5 hour drive and since my dad LOOOVES the great outdoors the Smokey’s beckoned. It wasn’t Gatlinburg to me if we didn’t do all the fun stuff I did as a kid so we made our way up to Ober Gatlinburg on the SkyTram and rode the alpine slide with the kids. I loved it, every second of it. We also took a quick hike up in the Smokey’s but since we only had a day to spend we had to make it brief. Our trip was made complete, however, when we saw a mama bear and her 3 cubs in the wild!! It was so awesome and a little too close for my comfort. We hope to go back again soon and do a little more hiking.

Jack and I at the top of our very steep hike, the clouds were blocking our view. It was 59 degrees, in July!!!?!

Edisto Island

August 14th, 2013 . by Jason

We took a vacation in mid-July to Edisto Island in South Carolina with our friends the Eberts and Hewards. It was lovely. The scenery, the company, the weather, everything was just great. We had so much fun at the beach, playing games with our friends, and eating really great food every night. The only tough part was the 14 hour drive, bleh! We’ve never driven that far with kids and to our utter and complete surprise, it went amazingly well. I was SUPER prepared because I was so worried the drive would be a catastrophe but the kids we’re incredible, there wasn’t a single tantrum or episode. Here’s a little of what we did in SC.

The Hustle and Bustle of July

August 14th, 2013 . by Jason

There was a lot going on in July. It was my first month as a stay-at-home Mom and I kept us busy. We also took a vacation, but more on that later!

IMG_1393

We went to the Purdue Engineering Grad Student Fair.

IMG_1041

The kids loved the Boilermaker Special.

IMG_1159

We also headed to the ol’ Tippecanoe County Fair. It would be a fair without an elephant ear.

IMG_1152

Jack bonded with the goats.

IMG_1131

Little Miss’ hair is getting really long, she’s looking more and more like a little girl and less like a baby. :(

IMG_1088

My dad came to visit and watched Jack swim.

IMG_1078

The 4th of July

August 14th, 2013 . by Jason

We had a pretty laid back 4th. Jason had to go into work in the morning so the kids and I enjoyed a patriotic breakfast and then marched around the house to Yankee Doodle Dandy. It was grand. Our friends the Sutherlands invited us over for some treats and fireworks. The kids had tons of swimming and eating. We didn’t go to the big fireworks show, the kids were pretty beat but we watched a few of our neighbors light their’s up.

IMG_0944

Old Glory never tasted so good.

She really enjoyed that cupcake.
